One of the questions I’m asked most often before a session is: “What should we wear?”
As a Denver, Colorado-based family and motherhood photographer, I understand how important it is to feel confident in what you’re wearing — not just because it looks good in photos, but because when you feel beautiful, it shows.
Fall portraits are about more than pretty leaves — they’re about preserving connection, warmth, and the way your family looks right now, in this fleeting season. These simple, elevated styling tips will help you feel relaxed, polished, and fully present in front of the camera.
1. Start with Mom — and Build Around Her
In my experience, the easiest way to style a family is to begin with what makes mom feel her best — whether that’s a flowy dress, a soft sweater set, or a favorite pair of boots. Once that outfit is chosen, we build the rest of the family around it using complementary colors and textures.
You’re the heartbeat of your family, and your comfort and confidence will set the tone for the whole session.
2. Keep It Neutral, Earthy, and Timeless
Fall in Colorado is stunning — golden trees, warm light, and soft, muted tones. I always recommend choosing a color palette that complements the scenery rather than competes with it.
Favorite fall hues:
- Warm ivory, oatmeal, or soft taupe
- Olive, sage, dusty rose, or muted rust
- Deep charcoal, navy, or camel as grounding tones
These colors age beautifully, allowing your portraits to remain timeless year after year.
3. Think “Cohesive,” Not “Matching”
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for varied textures and tones that work well together without being identical.
Some ideas:
- Layer knits with linen, cotton with corduroy — textures photograph so beautifully in fall light.
- Mix subtle patterns (like florals, plaids, or stripes) with solids.
- Keep shoes neutral and clean — leather boots, soft loafers, or simple flats work well for kids and adults alike.
The goal is a coordinated look that feels effortless, not overly styled.
4. Prioritize Comfort — Especially for Kids
Children are at their best when they feel free to move, play, and be themselves. That’s when we get those real, joyful expressions you’ll want to remember forever.
Choose pieces that are soft, well-fitted (not stiff or scratchy), and allow for a little wiggle room. Bonus: I’ll guide the session in a way that feels fun and natural — no forced smiles or awkward poses required.
5. Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches
Small details can make a big impact.
- For moms: A soft curl, a swipe of blush, and a touch of mascara is often all you need. If you prefer full hair and makeup, I’m happy to recommend trusted local artists.
- For kids: Keep hair neat, faces clean, and bring along a favorite brush or comb for touch-ups.
- Accessories: A well-placed bow, a wide-brim hat, or a textured scarf can add interest — just keep it simple and avoid anything too distracting.
Bonus: I’m Always Here to Help
Every session includes a personalized styling guide, and I’m always happy to weigh in on outfit selections. You’re welcome to send me photos or lay everything out on the bed and text me a quick snapshot — we’ll make sure your look is cohesive and camera-ready.
The End Goal: Effortless, Elegant, and Emotionally True
Styling is important — but even more important is how you feel the day of your session. My goal is to take the pressure off, so you can fully enjoy this time with your family.
